Professor Piotr Ponikowski is Professor of Cardiology, Head of the Department of Cardiology, Centre for Heart Disease, Military Hospital, Wroclaw, Poland and Head of the Department of Heart Diseases, Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical University, Wroclaw, Poland.
Professor Ponikowski studied at the Medical University in Wroclaw, Poland. During postgraduate training he completed a scholarship at the Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden in 1991, and worked in London at the Royal Brompton Hospital and at the National Heart and Lung Institute, while a recipient of a European Society of Cardiology research fellowship in 1994-5.
He is a President Elect of Polish Cardiac Society.. He was a Councillor of the ESC board (2012-2014), and a Past-President of the Heart Failure Association of the ESC (2010-2012).
His main research interest is heart failure, including cardiorespiratory reflex control, the role of metabolic and neurohormonal mechanisms, and acute heart failure. He is currently involved in work on anemia and iron deficiency in heart failure syndrome.
Professor Ponikowski has been the main investigator for numerous clinical trials and a member of international steering committees, endpoint committees, and advisory boards. Professor Ponikowski is a reviewer and editorial board member for several leading cardiovascular journals such as European Heart Journal and European Journal of Heart Failure. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and review articles.
